Top ten Fun things to do while in Charleston

Dock Crabbing:
Rent yourself some crab rings at any number of businesses in the Charleston area, buy some crab bait – fish heads, carcasses, or poultry (sea lions HATE poultry), and throw out the ring from the end of one of the docks and you’re in the right spot for some fresh Dungeness crab dinner!

Clamming:

Check the handy dandy tide book, and see when the lowest tide is. Once you’ve established a time to go, don your rubber boots, and grab your rake, shovel, and bucket, and head for the mud! Playing in the mud this way can’t get you into too much trouble, you’re bringing home some tasty seafood!

Deep Sea Fishing:

Charleston is known for one of the safest bars on the west coast, and since it is so wide, your chances are good at getting out on one of the many local charter boats. The best and most entertaining fishing is the bottom trips, as you never know what you’ll bring up from the bottom of the sea. Other trips (seasonal, so call ahead to plan one) consist of Halibut, Salmon, and Tuna.

Beachcombing:

For those folks who’s stomach doesn’t do quite well on the ocean, but want to smell the salty air, and enjoy the crashing of the waves, beachcombing may be the ideal activity for you. Charleston is the gateway to some of the finest beaches on the south coast!

Tidepooling:

For the more adventuresome beachcomber, tidepooling is not only a challenge but extremely interesting. See sea stars, anemones, hermit crabs disguised among the rocks, as the ocean tides come in and out!

South Slough National Estuarine Preserve:

The first of its kind in the United States! Hike for miles on the nature trails, experience wildlife in their natural surroundings, go canoeing, or visit the interpretive center that is abundant with information for all ages!

Shore Acres Botanical Gardens:

The second largest botanical gardens on the west coast is guaranteed to take your breath away! Perched atop dramatic cliffs high above the ocean, these gardens are magnificent any time of year! A Special Christmas lights displays attracts visitors world wide for a one-of-a-kind winter wonderland! A definite must see while in the Charleston area!

Cape Arago Lighthouse:

From sea to shining sea, where there is the ocean, there will be a light house! The Oregon Coast is littered with lighthouses, and Charleston is proud to be home to one of its own historical maritime sites!

Sunset Bay not only boasts of having one of the best swimming around, but for those who couldn’t leave their clubs behind, a challenging and beautiful 9-hole course awaits you!
